I have wanted to do a website like this for a while now. So, here it is…it’s humble beginnings.
Bendigo, up until a few years ago, was a back water as far as craft beer went. Nothing outside of your usual CUB and Toohey’s beer was on offer at nearly all of the venues frequented in town. A revolution was happening around us but we were too ignorant to pay any attention.
Your choices were bland, bland or bland.
I still remember it clearly, the day I was walking down Chancery Lane in the Bendigo CBD…right past a little restaurant called The Dispensary. On a chalk sign out the front it read, “Beer Masterclass. Strange and wonderful beers from around the world!”. This immediately had my attention…the thought of something different. Not bland lager after lager that was on offer all around me…this would be something very different. Boy was it something different! My pallet was exposed to an array of flavours I had never experienced before in beer. Cherrie
s, peat and many others that I can no longer remember. But they all made a lasting impression.
Since then, Bendigo Beer successfully formed and started to introduce craft beer as an alternative at local establishments. Some took a little while to catch on while others embraced it. Craft beer has now experienced surge of acceptance in Bendigo and the options are fantastic. The choices available from the local liquor outlets has also shown that the demand is there. People want better tasting beer!
